Building Self-Esteem

What can I do to improve my self-esteem?
1.        Stop Thinking Negatively:  Lack of self-esteem stems from our own mind and how we feel that we are perceived by others.  We begin to decrease our self-esteem when we start looking at the negative.  It’s the glass half full – half empty idea.  When you find yourself thinking negatively, stop and take a step back.
a.       Exercise – Smile!! If you are smiling, it will be hard to think negatively
2.       Start Thinking Positively:  After you have taken a step back, find the positive instead of the negative.  It may not be easy at first, that’s why you will have to find it.  As you get in this routine though, it will get easier.
a.       Exercise – Write five things that you like about yourself every day before you go to bed
3.       Make a Contribution:  When we feel like we have done something of value, our self –esteem goes up.
a.       Exercise – Find someone you can help today and do it.
4.       Aim for Accomplishments Instead of Perfection:  Too many of us get unmotivated when we think of how far away we are from our idea of perfection.  Instead of aiming so high, try one step at a time.  Aim for a goal, an accomplishment, or something small that you can achieve.
a.       Exercise – Set one goal to achieve in this week.  When you have accomplished it, set another.
5.       Acknowledge what you can change and what you can’t: There are always things about ourselves that we can change and improve, but there are also others that we can’t.  The trick is to acknowledge what you can’t change and think positively about those things, then think of what you can change and set small goals to help you achieve your desire.
a.       Exercise – Write down what you can and can’t change about yourself and make a goal for something you can change.
